What's on the sheet
- 5 rows of 5 Oopsies
- The rule is an accessory: glasses, a mustache, a hat or hair
- The odd one shares a color with someone in its row, so color is no clue
Printed instructions: “In each row, circle the Oopsie that doesn't belong. Hint: look at what they wear, not at their color!”
About this odd one out sheet
Now the rule is what the Oopsies wear. Every row mixes colors, and the odd one out always has the same color as another Oopsie in its row, so a child can't rely on color: they have to notice that everyone wears glasses except one. Only Oopsies whose accessories are easy to see are used, the same ones the app trusts for its Family Reunion levels.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Before circling, ask your child to find what all the Oopsies in the row share.
- If they pick an Oopsie for its color, point out that color isn't the rule here and ask them to look again.
- Make your own rule: draw three Oopsies with hats and one without, and swap roles.
The skill it trains: visual discrimination
Visual discrimination is the ability to notice how things you see are alike and how they differ: their shape, color, size and small details. It is what tells a child that b and d are two different letters, or which of two almost identical pictures has an extra button.
Visual discrimination: what it is, signs a child finds it hard, and more activities
Play it in Oopsies: Odd Ones
💡 Odd Ones
Every Oopsie on screen shares a feature with the one to find: its color, an accessory, its smile or its shape (all red, all with a mustache, all with glasses…). That shared feature never gives it away, so children compare faces and small details.
