About this shadow matching sheet
Five pairs this time, and some outlines are only a little different: a tuft of hair here, a bumpy edge there. Children have to compare the shapes carefully instead of spotting the one with the hat. The silhouettes are made from the very same drawings as the Oopsies, turned black.
Tips for parents and teachers
- When two shadows look alike, ask your child to compare the tops of the heads first, then the sides.
- Draw the lines in pencil first, then go over them in color once all five are matched.
- Turn the sheet upside down for a second go: the matches stay the same, the shapes look new.
The skill it trains: form constancy
Form constancy is the ability to recognize a shape or an object even when it changes size, color, position or direction. A triangle is still a triangle when it's huge, tiny, upside down or red, and a cup is still a cup seen from above.
Form constancy: what it is, signs a child finds it hard, and more activities
Play it in Oopsies: Shadow Show
🌑 Shadow Show
The Oopsie to find is shown as a shadow, so children match its outline without colors or face details. In some levels it is the other way round: the whole scene is shadows and the Oopsie to find is in color.
