Figure-ground activities for kids, with free PDF worksheets
Picking one thing out of a busy background. Finding a friend in a crowd, or one word on a full page.
What is figure-ground?
Figure-ground perception is the ability to pick out one thing (the figure) from a busy background (the ground) and keep your attention on it. Finding a friend in a crowd, a word on a full page or one Lego brick in the box all rely on it.
Occupational therapists list it among the visual perceptual skills: the ways the brain makes sense of what the eyes see.
Why it matters
Classrooms and books are visually busy. Children use figure-ground skills to find the next question on a worksheet, keep their place on a page, find the right tool in a drawer, and follow a ball against a crowd at recess.
When it is hard, busy pages can feel overwhelming, and a child may give up on a task that is really about finding things, not about understanding them.
Signs a child finds figure-ground hard
- Gets lost on busy worksheets, skips questions or whole lines
- Can't find an object in a cluttered drawer or toy box, even when it is in plain sight
- Finds seek and find books stressful rather than fun
- Is easily thrown off by visual clutter on a page or a wall
- Loses their place when copying from the board
These are everyday observations, not a checklist and not a diagnosis: every child develops at their own pace, and many children show a few of these now and then. If something worries you, talk to your child's teacher or doctor. Eyesight is checked by an eye doctor; visual perception can be assessed by an occupational therapist.
6 figure-ground activities for home and the classroom
-
Junk drawer hunt At home
Name one object in a busy drawer and ask your child to find it with their eyes only, no touching. Then ask for everything blue, or everything round.
-
Treasure in the rice At home or in class
Hide small toys in a tub of rice or dried beans and let your child dig them out. Toys close in color to the rice make it harder.
-
Highlight the word In class
Give a short paragraph and ask children to highlight every "the". Then a harder word, like "and" inside longer words.
-
Overlapping shapes At home or in class
Draw three or four overlapping shapes with one pen. Your child colors each shape a different color, following its outline through the overlaps.
-
I spy in a picture book At home
Busy picture books are perfect: "I spy something with stripes", "I spy a red umbrella". Take turns asking.

Printable seek and find At home or in class
The free sheets below hide Oopsies in a crowd, then in an overlapping pile where the ones to find are partly covered. Answer keys are on page 2.
Free figure-ground printables
Made with the Oopsies from our game: one page to print, the answer key on page 2. Free for home, classroom and therapy use.
Oopsies worlds that use figure-ground
Oopsies is a seek-and-find game, and each world adds a twist. These are the ones where figure-ground does most of the work:
🥰 Frosti Floops
The Oopsies are packed tight, touching and overlapping like a cuddly pile. After the first levels, more and more of them share the color, then the accessory, of the one to find.

🪐 Starry Zoooooop
The Oopsies float on a dark, starry background: drag to look around, pinch to zoom in on a likely spot. As levels go on, more of them share the color, then the accessory, of the one to find.

Questions about figure-ground
What is a figure-ground activity?
Any activity where a child has to find one thing in a busy scene: a seek and find page, a word search, small toys hidden in rice, a friend in a playground photo. The busier the background, the harder it gets.
Are seek and find books good for figure-ground skills?
Yes, they practice exactly that: picking one picture out of a crowded page. Start with simple pages and few items, and stop while it is still fun.
What is the difference between figure-ground and visual scanning?
Visual scanning is how the eyes search a space (in order, without skipping). Figure-ground is telling the thing you want apart from everything around it. A busy seek and find page needs both.
